The "slowdown" is not something the average PC user will ever notice.

Update: As of January 5th, TechSpot and Guru3D have performed some benchmarks for Windows. Both sites concluded that desktop users don’t have much to worry about. Some PC games see a small 2% slowdown with the patch, which is within the margin of error, while others appear to perform identically. 3D rendering, productivity software, file compression tools, and encryption utilities appear unaffected. However, file read and write benchmarks do show noticeable differences. The speed of quickly reading a large amount of small files dropped about 23% in Techspot’s benchmarks, and Guru3D found something similar. On the other hand, Tom’s Hardware found only a 3.21% average drop in performance with a consumer application storage test, and argued that the “synthetic benchmarks” showing more significant drops in speed don’t represent real-world usage.

The researchers who discovered Meltdown said that patching systems would slow them down by as much as 30 percent in certain situations. That could be a problem for big cloud systems.

Independent software developers also ran tests on a patched version of Linux, the open-source operating system that now drives more than 30 percent of the world’s servers, and saw similar slowdowns.

“There are many cases where the performance impact is zero,” said Andres Frome, a software developer who has tested the new code. “But if you are running something like a payment system, where a lot of small changes are made to data, it looks like there will be a significant performance impact.”

Consumers are less likely to be affected, and Mr. Kocher said slowdowns could dissipate over time as companies refined their patches.

I agree. I didn't notice it on any of the 6 systems here. I think of those who did see any difference, for most users it was only in benchmarks, not in real-world use. Then for most of the remaining users, it was only in their heads! That left only a very tiny few who actually experienced real problems.

Of course, if it only truly affects 1/10th of 1% of the Windows users out there, that's still over 1.5 million upset users. And 1.5 million upset users can make a lot of noise.

Still, I am glad Microsoft is addressing this.
