Window XP failed to write to disc

I've recently encountered a problem when copying video clips from my DVD backup discs to hard drive, where the message pops up with 'windows failed to write to hard disc' and the copy process is aborted. However, it seems to happen only with the DVD drives, as I can go to my friend and copy clips to my 2GB USB memory stick and copy from there????

I've run all sorts of tests on all drives and no problems can be found, I'm at a loss on this one.
