Sometimes when I open a shortcut on my desktop, (Control Panel, Pictures), the window will open differently from the last time I closed it. For example, in the Control Panel window I have the view set to "icons" and the window sized to "just fit" all the icons. Sometimes it opens up in a "details" view and a much larger window in a lifferent location. The Pictures window is in the "details" view and sized to show only the filename. Sometimes it opens in a much larger window and a different location on the screen.

I have the "Remember each folder's view settings" checked in the "View" tab of "Folder Options ".

A friend of mine has a similar problem on his computer at work.

I have no idea what starts this particular annoyance but it will usually stop if you first set to have all look alike and set them to match a folder - root of the system drive works well for me.

Then a reboot and change to remember individual settings and change one.

Also bear in mind that if you shut down with a window open, the system will usually remember exactly how you had it at shutdown and give it back to you the same way the next time you open it.

    Welcome to the boards!

I've had this problem in the past, for some reason XP becomes confused at times and can't seem to remember your folder settings. To correct this issue open the registry and back-up the following keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

Once you've backed them up delete both the keys and then reboot. The keys will be recreated during reboot and XP will once again remember your settings.

    HTH.
