    Greetings:

I joined Windows BBS in order to see if I could get help with Windows 7 and Skype.

I am new to Skype. I have only made one video call which over all was excellent. The person I was talking to said the video quality on his end was blotchy. His video on my end was really good. I checked an area where it informed me that my output was medium where his was good.

I think the answer to my output problem has something to do with the programs running in the background. (screen saver and sleep mode?????)

I am sure the problem is quite simple to fix but I am not sure what to do.

I have a brand new computer (laptop) with a built-in webcam. HPdv7-6123cl with an intel i5, windows 7.

I simply want to have the other people see me as well as I see them. Can you help?

    David

It could simply be down to your upload speed...

What connection do you have (eg I have 20Mbit download but only 768Kbit upload)?

Now where to find this info: Control panel?

I will get back to you.

    David,

You'll find this information from the documents/contract with your ISP. Control panel will not help.

    BTW, Welcome to WindowsBBS :D

I tested my Upload and download spead:

    Results:
    Download: 2812 Kbps
    Upload: 810 Kbps

My internet provider wants to sell me a package to increase the internet speed. Add another $10 to my monthly bill....
For 10 something to 18 something (sorry I know it is bytes but not sure the correct wording.

Ok before you go further you need to know the terminology...

    1) Kilobits v Megabits, Megabits are 1024 times better.
    2) Upload v Download, your issue is with upload. ie there is no point increasing your ~2-4 megabit connection if you cannot increase your ~1 megabit upload.

I'm confident that the issue is with your supplier, so the options are to check your contract and/or switch to someone else.

FWIW, in my neck of the woods I'd tell them to go away and look for a better supplier, unfortunately that's not always possible.

Great bit of information from you! there is no point increasing your ~2-4 megabit connection if you cannot increase your ~1 megabit upload.

This information will help me when I talk to my internet provider. GREAT.

Sounds like that person might had a poor quality camera OR low on RAM possibly. Really small chance RAM has anything to do with it but do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and go to Task Manager and start closing unneeded applications that are open.

If it were RAM (on either side) then issues would be seen on both sides surely?

The poor quality camera would have to be on David's system and even then although "blotchy" isn't exactly technical it does indicate poor throughput rather than poor quality.

The problem if you can call it that is on my end and upload speed. I will need to increase the upload spead on my end.

On my end the quality was very poor and I told them that. They closed the program they were running and they quality of the video inproved as if they were in front of me.

I will see what programs are running in the background of my computer using your suggestion and see if that improves the video quality on their end. I have 6 gigs (is that correct) of ram available on my computer so I should have enough ram for good video on their end. I will have to take a look at what programs are running in the background.

    Thanks for the help.

I am sorry to say I have no idea which applications are needed and which applications are not needed.

I did go to the area you mentioned but I am not computer literate enough to figure out which programs need to be running and which programs do not need to be running.

Hi David. If you are unsure about which programs are starting up with your computer and how to get rid of them then follow this procedure.

Download and run Autoruns. After you download the zipped folder on your desktop, right click the zipped folder and click Extract All. After the folder has been extracted open the regular folder. Run the autoruns.exe program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as Administrator. When you open the program click the Logon Tab.

Next, take a screenshot of the Autoruns logon tab program so that I can see what entries are starting up with your system. If you don't know how to take a screenshot take a look here, Take a Screenshot.

Once you saved the picture file go to http://imageshack.us/ and upload the screenshot on that site. Then in your next reply copy the link of the URL on the imageshack website so that I can see the screenshot.

I tried my best but for some reason I am not able to print the screen by pressing Alt + print screen key. Yes I pressed the alt key and held it down as I presed the prt sc key.

Yes I opened as administrator. I will close all applicarions and try again.

    David

    I appreciate your help.

Ok since you have the image saved on your desktop you need to upload the image onto the imageshack website that I linked to in my previous post. Once the file has been uploaded post the link to the image in your next reply.
