    Hi!

I have been using both, WinZIP and WinAce, for years now. Not so oddly enough  , I have just noticed that, all in all, WinAce seems to "out compress" WinZIP by enough to make a substantial difference with respect to space on my HDs.

I have seen sets of WinAce files with the C01, C02, C03, and so on.......and have decompressed them. Now, as I am going about compressing data with mutiple files, I see that I am ending up with only a single WinAce file which seems to be doing the job for me vs. WinZIP, as far as size is concerned.

    QUESTION:

How is this done, with the multiple WinAce files all working together to compress something like the contents of a mutiple file disc, for instance, and should I be concerned about it at all for what I'm doing or not? I am happy with the results of one WinAce file vs. most (not all) WinZIP files. I guess I need to know why the multiple WinAce sets exist and for what reason they exist.

Any light you can shed is always appreciated more than you all know. ;)

    Thanx in advance,
    Randy

The single largest reason for compressing things into multiple files, is for ease of upload to the net. Most places will only allow a 1, 2, or 5 meg filesize, even if they offer gig's of space, so any file larger than the server's max, is split into multiple bits.
Sometimes it's used to split extremely large files (movies for example) into bits that will fit on a CDR, or even split something up to fit on multiple floppys.
If you find that one large file is usable, fine. If you find something that won't fit on your CDR, but need permanent storage for it, then WinAce (Or WinRAR, or WinZip, or any other good compression software) can split a file up, to span over whatever media you're using.

    Thanx, reboot!

    You are a gentleman & a scholar! :D

This is good, sound posting you practice. ;)

Have the very nice day that you truly deserve and thanx once again to this forum, which I absolutely could not live without!

    Randy

P.S. (Not that I see ever using it, but does anyone have any URLs for WinAce, WinZIP, or WinRAR when it comes to this multiple file stuff for posting to the web. I can't see ever using it but knowledge is power.....or whatever they say. :) )

    Thanx again
