I am running win98 that has been updated regularly via windows update. Iassumed that this would give same functionality as Win98SE. Am I wrong in thinking that the updates provide the equivalent OS as the upgrade CD. Having recently purchased new software (arcgis) I find Iam unable to install it, as it requires win98se. Do I have to buy the upgrade, or can I modify the subversion registry entries, or similar registry hack, to allow the software to load.?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS:)

Yep. Doing the updates will not convert you to SE. You'll have to purchase a win98SE upgrade cd.
