win98se instalation stops

It stops when it is finalizing settings. It's almost finished but doesn't seem to get there. I've installed it before with no trouble but on this older computer?
It's a 6X86 cpu and use to work well?

I would check the cd that is not dirty ( clean with a soft cloth and water or water and a bit of mild soap)

I would also try another cd to install from. Simply open the case , match the jumpers on the older cd)

Thanks Vision I should have suspected that. I have others to try so I'll sure do that. Your help is appreciated.

Can you tell us what stage it stops at? If it is "installing hardware" try removing any add-in cards, especially ISA cards if it has them. You can put them back in when Windows is running, but you will need to have the correct drivers available.
