Hi, Friend had to uninstall and reinstall office 97. Now outlook express is missing as default mail. Went to tools/ internet options but outlook express is not even an option. How do I get O E set back up as default when opening mail.

If you're sure Outlook Express isn't on your drive at all now:

Take a look in C:program Files\Internet Explorer\ and see if there is a file named setup.exe. If so, double click it and if you get lucky it will reinstall IE for you. You will get OE along with it since it's bundled in there of late. If you have an older version you'll have to download OE separately. I think the integration started with version 5.5 perhaps but I'm not exactly sure.

That presupposes the IE cab files are still on your drive. If you deleted them or installed from a disk, you will need to either download a new set or use the disk again.

    Good luck.

    should have been clearer

Outlook is still installed and will start if clicked on. The problem is it was Sue's default mail handler and now since the office 97 reinstall outlook has replaced it.. The problem is outlook express is not available anywhere I can find to be set as default mail handeler. Starting IE5 and chosing Tools/internet options/programs, Outlook express is not even an available option to be choosen. Hope this makes my problem more understandable.

    Oh. OK, I savvy now.

You should find that by opening OE and clicking on TOOLS > OPTIONS and press the right button you'll see there that says "Make this the Default Mail Program ". You may have to scratch around for it in there, I'm looking in OE6 but OE5 may have it buried deeper. It's on the General tab for me.

    still nothing

Hey, I can't find any right click in this version. I Can find e-mail assignment on programs tab of internet options and only option there is Outlook. It's a drop down box, no editing to add anything. Has to be something with the Office97reinstall.Everything worked fine till that reinstallwas done. Is there a way to edit reg. to point it to OE as default mail handler.

To be sure OE is the default mail client, close OE, click Start| Run and enter this command line, complete with quotes, spaces and the /reg switch:

    "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

Of course change the path if you installed OE elsewhere.

Now click Start| Settings| Control Panel, double-click Internet Options, then click on the Programs tab, and verify that OE is now the default email client. (You can also get there from the IE Tools| Internet Options menu). Then open OE and click Tools| Options, and at the bottom of the General tab, verify that OE is set as the default. If it is, the "Make Default" button will be grayed out. If not, click the button.

tried all but still not working

Thanks for getting back. Further info, outlook express is still installed and will work if you click start/programs and click on it. Problem is when you choose mail/read in IE5 it is not launched . I've been into internet options at least 100 times. I keep clicking ,set as default and apply but each time I go back set as default is still required (not grayed out). Under options/programs the only choice is outlook. This all started when office97 was reinstalled. Ran the "C:\Program Files\outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE" /reg but it had no effect that I can tell.

Try this, open the IE browser and click TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > PROGRAMS and take a look at the E-mail area and correct it as needed.

    still nothing

Tried this many times, however the only changes that can be made are thru the drop down boxe choices and OE is not a choice for e-mail but it is for news. Sure baffles me why the box pops up telling you outlook express is not you default e-mail and asks if you would like it to be, clicking yes still dosen't work. Any other suggestions would be helpful. I'm lost.
