I had two PCs running Win 98SE networking with each other. I ugraded one to Win 2000, now they can't "find" each other.

In addition to the usual requirements for networked PCs (as you must have had correct since they could talk with 98 as the OS)

Both must be logging on using a username & password.

The 2K machine must either have the guest account enabled (disabled by default) or else a local user exactly matching the username/password you are using to log on to the 98 PC.

Both PCs must have something shared - folder, file, something.

Also, I believe if you did not use FAT32 on the 2K box, then the 98 box will not be able to access and read the 2k files.

How can I tell if I'm using FAT32. Shouldn't the 2K box at least be able to see the 98 box?

The default file system for WIN2K is NTFS. Unfortunately you cannot downgrade your file system from NTFS to FAT32. I would suggest that you either upgrade your 98 Box or re-install 98 on your current WIN2K Box, whichever one leaves the less heartache is the one I would change out myself.

I also have a question for you.
Are they a part of a Domain or Workgroup? There is probably another way to resolve this.

eznoh - over the network all the various file systems can see files on the other systems. It is only if you have a dual/multi boot PC where 9X and 2K are running on the same PC that 98 can only see Fat12/16/32 files and can't even see that NTFS files are there.

But in your case where 2K is on one PC and 98 on another, it just isn't an issue. Networks with PCs running 95 all the way up to XP and all talking are common.

As an example, the network here is about 1500 PCs. The majority are Win95 but quite a few NT4/2K/XP. All the workstations map to a user's personal share on a big file server. Users store all their documents, spread sheets, and other personal data files there rather than on the local PC. The file server is all NTFS and the 95 PCs have no trouble at all using their files from the file server and putting revised versions back there.

The usual culprit with the symptoms you describe is a firewall that isn't set up just right.

That's it! Zone Alarm is the problem, I shut it down on the 2K box and the 98 box can see it. Thanks!!

    Win 95? I thought I was bad just upgrading from 98 to 2000 in 2003. :)
