I made that mistake also. And believe me it WAS NOT one of my better ideas.

#1--Fdisk and/or Formating is the only way to get rid of Windows ME.

#2--If you mean that you have 2 60gig HDs not partitioned you are WASTING a LOT of space due to cluster size.

#3--Partitioning is a very good way of preserving programs and most of their data. Plus it gives you chance to save all downloaded stuff so that it is not lost if the C: drive goes bonkers and needs re-doing.

#4--As of right now all downloaded 98, 98SE stuff needs to be saved if we wish to continue using 98 or 98SE. Especially drivers.

#5 If you do re-format I would suggest going with 98SE ( if you can find it ) or XP.

    BB ....

    Quote you :

    Why ?

    - DOS Floppy, delete Windows folder
    - Win98 CD in drive
    - Setup

    regards

PS Or nice and easy if you have a drive image of the WinSE drive

Your idea is fine. Works fine when going back with the same or higher version. But going backwards is a different story. I tried that and the results were not satifactory. Wound up reformatting C: anyway.

It also leaves a whole bunch of ME stuff ( which a lower version may not ( or be capable of ) use(ing ) ) scattered throught the drive.

For starters Audio and Video Drivers. Both of which may be in separate folders other than under the Windows folder. And both of which may not be backwards compatable. Especially Video.

Various possibley incompatable programs ( or files within same ) in C:\Program Files folder.

All of the above will need to be re-installed anyway. And if the old still exists will not ( or at least may not ) re-install PROPERLY.

Windows does not run from just the C:\Windows folder alone.

Most AV software will need to be removed before re-installing. And more than likely seing the original post here will not uninstall properly.

And maybe most of all an existing S.C.R.E.W.E.D. up install of ME anyway.

    From original post
To me this indicates a bad original install of ME. Or with Kernel32 being mentioned, a bunch of incompatabe files may exist. Whether it be OS, Program files or both. Who knows ?

I did install ME overtop of 98 ONCE. I uninstalled ME and all was back where I started with no problems. So I do know that it can be done. But ME was un-installed just because I did not like it. Not because it was not working.

On another machine I was not so lucky. It was format and start over time.

But in this case I think " Forget it and start over " may be the better way.
