Win98 machine connects unreliably to Win2k Pro shared drives. Login and password all setup just fine. Protocol is TCP/IP and Microsoft SPX/IPX.

Win98 machine has no problem accessing shared resources (internet via Router, or ethernet shared printers). The Win2k has no problems accessing shared folders on the Win98 machine--so there is this asymmetry.

After upgrading Win98 machine to Win2k, all the connectivity problems disappeared, but a Win98 notebook which was not previously networked now shows the same symptoms.

Since I have never seen a similar problem with Win98 machines and NT4.0, it seems to be a problem with Win2k and Win98 (and Win95 I assume).
What causes this? What is the solution?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The answer to a prior post by someone else may be related -- the solution which worked there was Winsock proxy server installation. If that is the solution here, where can that be located, and I'm assuming it is installed on the W98 machine??

    Thanks,

    Dan

Dan - if you are using a peer-to-peer LAN, try putting a user account for each PC on the others. Exact logon username and pwd.

If you have another setup, please specify.

    Prof Newt,

The Win2k machine has logins all setup, but there is no user login for the Win2k user to access the W98 notebook--there does not need to be, the Win2k can access the Win98 machine without fail.

The problem is to get the Win98 machine to access the Win2k machine. The Win2k machine(s) show up when checking Net Neighborhood on the Win98 machine but when you click on Win2k machine --error message says Win2k machine is not available on network (or something like that).

There is both TCP/IP and MS IPX/SPX protocols on both machines.

I have not had a chance to test your suggestion until the next time I am at this particular site. Do you really think it may solve this problem?

    Thanks,

    Dan

I finally had a chance to test Newt's suggestion, but alas, it does not make any difference.

The suggestion to add login/pword to the W98 computer does not help. Keep in mind that the Win2k machines can access shared folders on the W98 machine no problem-from the very beginning.

The error message, when you click on the icon of Win2k machine (in Network Neighborhood), on the I finally had a chance to test the solution suggested by Newt, but it does not make any difference. Win98 machine stays the same before and after adding login for Win2k machine on the W98 machine:

\\MachineName is not available, this machine is not available on this network

There is some very strange screwy stuff going on here (crasy assymetry).

Any other ideas?? This problem has been posted quite a while ago. It's hard to believe that no one else has had this experience. Please post a note if you HAVE, even if you do not have any solutions.

    Thanks,

    Dan:confused:

OK. Sorry the username/password trick didn't work. It often does.

One more blind suggestion would be to try to map by IP rather than machine name. If that works, great.

If not, give details about the network. WINS? DNS? Routed? Can you ping the 2K machine from the laptop? Etc.

I am try to network a windows 2000 pro machine to a windows 98se machine (peer to peer)

I have setup cards, names ,workgroup name and protocols

I can see the win98 machine on windows 2000 machine but cant access any files or printers on the win98 machine and on the win 98 machine can even see the win2000 machine

I have assign ip address as follows
    win2000 192.168.0.1
    win98 192.168.0.2

win2000 machine can ping its self and the win98 machine
but win98 machine can only ping its self - if I try to ping the win2000 machine it gets a timed out message.

On windows 2000 Local area Network Connection details (win2000 has received packets from the 98 machine)

I have file and printer sharing on (on both computers)

sounds like one of your machines is not logged on to the network
In network neighborhood properties there is a tab called primary
network logon, it gives you a choice to set it to Windows Logon.
Then every time you log on to windows, you automatically log onto the network.

    Hope this helps.
