Win98 SE....Started to perform maintenance on kids' computer this AM. I should note that the computer worked fine up to this point. I ran Adaware...found a few items, low threat ad-type stuff. I freed up disk space by deleting temp files and recycle bin. Ran scandisk...it made a couple of repairs. When I went to defrag the drive, I began to close all of the tasks except for explorer and systray (this is what I was told to do and have always done this) by C+A+D from the Task Moniter. At this time, the computer froze up, about halfway through the process. I could not reboot, except for the button on the tower. After scandisk ran, the computer began to load Win98 SE, but froze before all of the icons in the quick launch tray at the bottom right were loaded. I was able to boot in safe mode, ran a successful defrag, and tried rebooting, but the problem persists. I then tried a scanreg/restore to yesterday's registry, but that didn't help either.

I appreciate any help anyone can give me!

You have some files missing or corrupted. I have a few suggestions to try, let's do the easiest first. Instead of Safe Mode, choose the Logged option at the Startup Menu. It creates a log file as windows boots up, C:\Bootlog.Txt .
Use Notepad's Find for the word "fail" to go through it easier.

Have you tried the Step by Step?

To get to this Startup Menu where you select this easier, do this. Go Start\Run, type in Msconfig and press Enter. Click on the Advanced button, and put a checkmark next to 'Enable Startup Menu'. Then Ok.
You may want to look under the Start tab while there, and disable all items except for Systray, Scanregw, and both PowerProf entries. Reboot
If no go on that, disable Systray.
If you get a successful start, it is one of the disabled items.
