    tweetjeep,

Welcome to the board! Can you give us any more info? Does it usually happen when using a certain program? What do you have running in the background? What can you do when it freezes? Does Ctrl-Alt-Delete get you anywhere? Do you have to shut off the power to get going again? Whatever info that you can offer would greatly help.

    Mike

    any program will freeze system

programs running in the background are
    earthlink updater and toolbar
    mixer
    hp printer
    twain32 scanner for flatbed

ctrl, alt, and del do not effect the freeze... you have to hit reset..

i have already run defrag. , scandisk, system file restore.
device manager looks good i have also disabled the ethernet card..
thanks for trying to help me.....

    tweetjeep,

Hopefully, somebody will chime in with some suggestions. In the meantime, I would try disabling one of the programs at startup to see if it helps. If the first choice doesn't work, try one of the other programs.

I will do some looking tomorrow to see if I can find anything else for you.

Would you clarify your last post?
The Master connection on the ribbon is at the end, the middle connection is the Slave. When the hard drive is jumpered to Cable, the ribbon position determines whether the drive is Master or Slave.
You should try having the CD as a Secondary Slave.

the cables are right i believe hard drive is prim. master and cd-rom is sec. master
i put the cd-rom that come with the hard drive in and was gonna format ...the disk says i have a boot virus and to go to www.antivirus.com ... a friend told me all i should have to do is fdisk and reload windows? What do yall think? i was only on the internet a few times before it started.... is it possible? i'm sure it is....

    Hmm, a boot virus. Just running fdisk, deleting and creating a new partition will not do the Master Boot Record. I would start with a new bootdisk. Before you boot the computer with it, write protect it by sliding the tab, you should see through both holes when done. Create the new partition, reboot with the floppy in. When booted type in the commmand;

    fdisk /mbr

It will appear to do nothing, that is normal. I would do it three times. That command rewrites the boot record.
    Then format it.

If you have "Virus Warning" (or something similar) enabled in the BIOS then when the Windows installer starts it will stop and say boot virus. I was reinstalling WIN98SE on an old pent. 166 about a year ago and ran into this. I could boot off the CD and start the install but as soon as it tried to write to the harddrive it would beep and flash a warning about a boot virus.

So the "bootvirus" mystery is solved?

When you reinstalled did you pull the modem, NIC, soundcard, etc.. out then add them one at a time? Or may be a faulty memory chip. Do you get any error messages at all before the lockup? Have you blown out the inside of the case with canned air? Could be overheating, post back with any info like what you are doing when this happens.

    tweetjeep,

Glad to hear that you got going again. Sorry that had the expense though. Hopefully, everything will run smooth for quiet awhile now!

tweetjeep what did you do with the old PC? If you kept it you may want to put the 30 gig harddrive (old 30 + new 20=50Gigs of space) in your new box or maybe buy a new Motherboard & CPU combo and network the two, just throwing a few ideas at you.

Anyways glad you got a new PC
