A friend of mine is a HP emloyee and when they were clearing the basement they found this old laptop.

He knew that I have a 5500 and asked me if I wanted it for spares, they were just going to throw it in the bin anyway. Of course, I accepted his offer.

I connected a charger and after a few hours it turned out to work fine, apart from the OS. NT started to load but never finished.

The 5700 is Win95 compatible and should be installed from the original CD to get all the specific drivers but the CD wasn´t there.

I decided to remove the NTFS partitions and make one FAT32 and reformat for installation of a retail Win98.
It seems to work fine, except for the OmniBook drivers and this:

There´s a mic and two speakers integrated in the keyboard. I have tried to adjust the speaker volume and mic gain but the settings (in Win98) are reset at reboot. The problem is accoustic feedback which makes the damned thing shreek like a pig on the line during the BIOS sequence. When Win98 starts to load it shuts up but the settings are still wrong.

Speaker volume can be set in the BIOS setup as well but that one is also reset.
    (I´ve flashed the latest BIOS-release)

Does anyone know why my settings aren´t stored?

Is it an incompatibility issue with Win98?

    TIA,
    Christer

    Hi Christer
I'm going to be of no help what so ever with this question, but thought I'd pop it back up to the top incase someone else may have some ideas. Have you made any headway with it?

Nope, but I´m finding more and more reasons why they found it in the basement! The screen too, is acting up from time to time.

I´ve checked the other OmniBook I´ve got and that one resets the different sounds on reboot so, I don´t think it´s the OS.
It doesn´t produce accoustic feedback though.

I´m going to open it up and try to find the problem, with the screen at least.
The feedback problem is simple, if I cant find the reason, I´ll cure the symptoms by simply cutting the wires to the mic. I´m not going to use it anyway.

    Thanks for Your concern,
    Christer
