On the win98 box, in Network neighborhood, when clicking on the win2k box, it is presented with a logon password. It show \\win2kbox\ipc$ the field for password. I do not know what this password is. I tried the win2k administrator password, the router's password but neither work.

win98 box can not see win2k resources.

Win98 on desktop, Win2k on laptop.

win98 has Primary Windows Logon: Windows Logon

Both connected to Linksys cable/dsl router, both have access to internet and working fine.

File and printer sharing selected on both box. The hard drives have sharing selected.

win2k box CAN see the files and map to the win98 box.

switch from Windows logon to Microsoft Network logon.
Create a user account on the Win2k system.
Logon to the Win98 system with that user.
Make sure you are in the same workgroup.

Win98 uses share level permissions to grant access to folders. Win2k uses user level permissions. Meaning you need to have a valid user account on the Win2k system before you can access the file shares. Otherwise you get an IPC$ error, asking for a password.

Took a while but I finally figured it out. Yes I did need to do what Bursley mentioned but there were some other steps that I needed to take.

I needed to install the NetBEUI protocol. For whatever reason this allowed the win98 box to communicate (through a Linksys Cable/DSL Router by the way) with the win2k box.

Not only was there the issue where it was asking for IPC$ password, in windows explorer the win98 box could not see the win2k box(through Network Neighborhood).

After installing NetBEUI, in Network Neighborhood the win2k box could be seen. Upon clicking on a folder in windows explorer then it ask for the password again. I then entered the win2k Administrator password and was then able to see files on the win2k box.

Now let's say that I had created a user on the win98 box called "User98 ". To allow that same user to access to the win2k box, I then have to have the same user created in the win2k box list of users itsef. In win2k box I then have to click on the Shared folder and give that same user specific permissions relating to that shared folder. i.e. what they can do to the folder and what they can do inside the folder.

WHuser - if you are going to do much of the sharing thing, lots easier to create groups that have the sorts of access you want to allow and then add as many users as you want to the group. Then give the group access.

Later if your needs change, easier to change permissions for one group than a bunch of single user accounts.

But if you just plan on one or two additional users, you can certainly add them to folders with the permissions you want them to have.

And you evidently have some other configuration issues if you needed NetBeui to view and work with shares. But if it works, not a problem and no reason to worry with any more tweaking.
