I have been using firewire on a Win98SE machine for a couple of years. Ive used a firewire card, and an audigy (in the past) to connect camcorders, external HD enclsosures, and DVD burners.

I recently reinstalled a number of programs from a clean disc image, including the DVD burner and related software. The burner is a Sony DRX510ul external with a firewire connect.

In the instructions, it is advised to install the Win98 IEEE driver update prior to connecting the unit. (required for Win98SE) It shows up in ADD/REMOVE as the Q8235559 update. I beleive this is also on the instructions for other firewire devices, ie., my Pyro ADS cases, but have never ran the installer since everything worked.

When I installed the update, the system crashed soon after, and a backup of the registry was required. I was making a lot of other changes so I do not know if it was related to this.

Questions: Do I need this update, or have I somehow already updated this with other firewire devices along the way. I do not think the Q823559 reference was in ADD/REMOVE before. The firewire card I have installed uses the TI 1394 driver?

    error in post

For some reason, the Edit button is missing in my post here-so I am replying to my own message.

I have the update # wrong. It is Windows Update: 242975USA8. It does not show up in ADD/REMOVE after install. Anyway, my original question is the same. Do I need to install this 1394 update if I am already using firewire? The Q828559 is apparently something else.

    From here.
April 2000 Update. This Storage Supplement addresses 1394 storage issues on systems with 1394 storage peripherals running Windows 98 Second Edition.

The update installs a Safe Removal utility that allows you to safely stop a Plug and Play storage device prior to physically unplugging the device. This component also includes an update for 1394 drivers to resolve issues related to the surprise removal of peripheral devices. Large performance improvements, in the order of 300%, have been made over the implementation of 1394 storage drivers in Windows 98 Second Edition.

    Thanks Mark,
I am pretty much aware of what the update does. My question is if I need to install it or not. Reason being, I already have had 1394 devices working on my system for a couple of years. Also, the Safe Removal Utility is apparently already on my system since it appears when an external 1394 drive such, such as my burner, is connected. I just don't recall installing it.
Could it be it was somehow bundled with something at some point? Is there anyway of checking the system to see if it is installed? It is not in ADD/REMOVE. Aslo, is there is harm in reinstalling it if it is already present. Is there only one version? Like I said, my system crashed shortly after installing the update-there was a lot of the ususal dialouge about replacing older files with newer, etc.

    Update

    Well,
I think I have answered my own question. I did a file search for the .inf mentioned in the Microsoft knowledge base, and found it. Sooooo, I guess I did install it somewhere-just did not remember doing so. I think it might have been bundled with some stuff I loaded from a Sony Camcorder a couple of years ago. Still don't know why the computer crashed after reinstalling it.

    Thanks,

    Milt

Yes, it is entirely possible it was bundled with something else. Maybe to avoid support calls when someone asks what it is and where to get it.
