    Hello...

I have a Compaq Presario 5150 desktop machine with Win 98 se

It was working Ok until I tried to install a Comp USA CD writer drive...

The drive was recognised OK, and up to THAT point all was well, but then I made the mistake of trying to install the NERO 6 disk that came with the new CD writer, and the machine has not been the same since...

When I try to boot the computer, it continiously REBOOTS just as soon as the desktop icons are loaded..

It boots OK in Safe Mode...

When in Safe mode, NONE of the 2 CD drives are recognised, which renders them useless, and the USB ports are also non functional in Safe Mode...

While in Safe Mode I uninstalled Nero, but the problem still exists...

I have no idea where my original boot & recovery disks are, much less my key. so I'd like to solve this be fixing th ecurrent installation...

I looked at the Autoexec.bat file but it did not have todays date, but an old date, so it doesn't look like this was touched by the flaky / failed installation of Nero...

Help Please...this is a major bummer because I really need this machine to work...

    Thanks In Advance...

How about trying a backup registry?
Boot the computer, but instead choose command prompt, and type in scanreg and press Enter. You should be presented with a list of them, choose one dated before this happened.
If just typing in Scanreg doesn't work, use c:\windows\command\scanreg.exe. Please note the direction of the slashes, it does make a difference.

If what Mark gives you doesn't work try typing; scanreg /restore and pick a date to restore before the problem occured.

Note the space between scanreg and the /
