Win98 Bootup error: Missing Win.com

    When I boot up my old computer running Windows 98, It tells me that it is missing file WIN.COM and goes to c:\ prompt.

    Did this problem start after you installed a piece of software?

    Edit your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files and post the contents back here. The new software probably added a entry(s) that is causing Windows to not load.

    There was nothing in Autoexec.bat and config.sys had the following:

    Device=c:\windows\himem.sys
    Device=c:\windows\emm386.exe

    Hi Wil

    So you are booting up to DOS?

    If so
    type
    cd\
    enter
    then
    attrib win.com /s
    enter

    If it does not find it, then insert your Win98 CD.

    If your cd is drive d:

    type d:
    cd\
    enter
    then
    attrib win.com /s
    enter

    if it finds it on the cd
    then copy it to
    c:\windows
