Here's hoping someone here can help me with Win95 and Juno conflicts. I can't figure out why I can do Juno e-mail, but not the web. (The only way I can access this site is from the library).

I recently rescued an old PC from the 'Florida Room'. I know for sure it was accessing the web in 1999. It came from a local ISP who is no longer in business. I found it had Juno on it, so I changed the Dial-Up Connection from the ISP's number to the local Juno. I also ran a SysInfo util, and looked inside the box, finding that I have a 486DX/133 with 16MB RAM, and 28.8kbps modem.

The main problem is that on selecting Juno40's Web tab I get online for precisely 18 seconds and then get disconnected while Juno is trying to load its first banner ad. (I actually see Juno hit itself on its own disconnect button!) Then the dial-up box appears, and any attempt to re-connect using this box fails.

A relatively minor irritation is that for some reason the machine has started loading IE5 (supplied by Juno) upon boot-up, and of course comes up with "Cannot find server ". Yet there are no programs at all in the Startup subdirectory, (C:\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\Startup).

Is there some way I can change Juno's timeout from 17 seconds to, say, 30, and would this solve the problem? Or is Juno supposed to bypass dial-up, in which case is there some way in which I can, or should, eliminate it entirely?

Thanks for your speedy reply, Daizy. Sorry for the delay in answering, but I can get on the web only for an hour a day at the library. And I had to try out some of the suggestions on the page you gave me.

I had gone through much of it before, but using IE5's Repair feature was new. My 'system' (ahem) now behaves quite differently, but the end result is the same. I get disconnected after about 15 to 25 seconds, and the DUN box pops up.

The upshot seems to be that my last hope is to reinstall Dial-Up Networking. Unfortunately this machine came with no Win95 installation CD. I am wondering if it is possible to download DUN from Microsoft as a separate module to a floppy. If not, I am out of luck. (I just took a look at MS support. DUN 1.4 is too big for floppy, but I found a file named AADUN3 on Download.com, so let's see if that works).

I had used Juno for a bit a long while ago. I will pass along what I remember about it. The email connection is not a winsock connection, just a plain computer to computer connection. While it is doing email, this is when those pesky pop ads that appear on the program startup are downloaded, along with files named click.vbs, pop.vbs, among others whose names escape me. Juno Web uses winsock2, which 95 does not have. A DUN update will fix that. A nasty quirk is if and when you uninstall Juno, you might have a particular message box saying that it appears rnaapp.exe is a shared file and is no longer in use, definitely keep that one. It is a part of DUN. When you do get it working, if you do your email at http://webmail.juno.com, the pop ups at program startup will eventually expire and cease. They will not allow Pop3 email. There is practically no way to get rid of the banner ad while online, though.
