After an on-line MS update is installed is the update
retained by win7 (if so, where are they located?)?

    Can they be removed safely?

    Thanks,
    savagcl

Sure. Go to Add/Remove programs. Click on "show updates ", and uninstall whatever you like.

I don't think that is the answer to OP's question :)

Unless you download the update manually from MS downloads, i.e. download the .exe file you do not have the installation file(s) on your computer.

In an online update the install files are downloaded to a temporary location, expanded (unzipped), installed and then dumped - AFAIK.

For Windows 7 they aren't *.exe, they are *.msu. 32-bit or 64-bit is differentiated by a preceeding -x86 or -x64. Other than that, I agree with Pete.

You are right, of course - it would have been more appropriate to have posted 'executable file' rather than .exe :)

    PeteC,

You are right. thats what i wanted to know (dumped or not).

Over time they can create a lot of 'clutter' that is not
    needed after being installed.

Glad MS took that route with updates.....

    Thanks,
    savagcl

Hi clif. Whenever you install Windows Updates via Start< All Programs< Windows Update, Windows stores the downloaded updates in the following directory, C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download.

After all the Windows Updates have been installed you can delete the contents of the download folder to free up disk space.

    Evan

All credit to you - clearly things have changed snce XP :)

However not all of the updates are listed there - there are far more installed updates than those in that location.

With today's large HD's I see little point in searching out files to delete - they only take up space which generally is not at a premium - e.g. I have 3 Tb of storage in my computer - nio RAID .

    Thanks for that Pete. :)

I have to agree with you that harddrives have indeed grown to larger capacities and while it may be unnecessary to search for files to delete its at least a good idea to know where Windows stores some of the files used by Windows Update and other functions.
