Recently the Win7 installation on my computer will only sporadically remember my passwords to various forums.

Example: Yesterday I was able to login here automatically. This morning I was unable to. I had to login manually.

I no longer see the Remember Password prompt either.

Up till now this Win 7 install has been flawless.

How do I fix this? Is there a repair program with in Win 7?

    Thanks.

For many forums like WindowsBBS, your username and password is stored in a cookie, (a little text file stored on your computer's hard drive).

So, if you have anything setup on your computer to erase cookie(s), you will have to re-enter your username and password the next time you want to log in.

Ditto. Many Anti Spware/Malware type of programs will zap cookies.

Even IE and other browsers have a clear cookie option.

I'm running CCleaner and MalwareBytes AntiMalware. I'll look into that and get back here.

Hi boyracer. Adding to what other members have said, you probably ran CCleaner and had it remove your cookies and Internet browsing history which is why you had to re-enter your username and password to certain website as the cookies storing that information on your computer were no longer there.

Which Internet browser are you using?

When you open up CCleaner, it will open to the Windows tab. Look at the 3rd box down in Internet Explorer in it and take the check out of Cookies. If you also use FF, in the Applications tab, you can take the check out of Cookies there also. That will cure your cookie problem in those 2 browsers. There may be some other program that is also deleting them and since we don't know what else you are using it is hard to say.

Also in IE, under Tools/Delete Browsing History, you can take the check out of the cookies box and that should also help.

My first thought before I posted my original question was that I had inadvertantly unchecked or checked something.

I had the box unchecked to remove cookies in CCleaner. I just turned the computer back on this afternoon and forums I could get into this morning now require a manual login. Interestingly this forum required a manual login this morning yet just now it didn't.

I'm using the lastest Internet Explorer.

I'm wondering if I have a corrupted file somewhere.

I don't think this is a cookie problem. I am no longer prompted on this computer as to weither or not I want Win7 to remember the password.

Can I re-install Win7 in hopes of recovering the errant file?

Try this. Open IE9 and click Tools< Internet Options. When the Internet Options window comes up on the general tab, make sure the Delete browsing history option is unchecked.

Then click on the Content Tab and under Autocomplete click on the Settings button. In the Autocomplete settings window click the checkbox that says User names and passwords on forms. Then click the checkbox underneath that one that says Ask me before saving passwords. After thats done click on Ok to close the window.

Now while still in the Internet Options window, click on the Advanced tab. Scroll to the bottom and under the Security heading make sure the option that says Empty Temporary Internet Files when browser is closed is unchecked.

Lastly, click on the Privacy Tab and under the Settings category at the top, set the privacy slider to Medium High. Now click on Apply then Ok to close the Internet Options window.

Restart IE for the changes to take affect. See if that works.

Thank You Evan, Your suggestion helped. Some of the boxes suggested were as they should be. I checked and unchecked anyway. It appears that my problem may be cured.
