I have set Win7 (running Ultimate 32bit ver) backup to run on a schedule to a USB hard drive backing up only certain folders and not a system image. I can run the task manually and it works fine but it will not run at the allotted time.

    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

You may have already done this, but may be the computer is going into 'Sleep mode' which will stop the back up, try disabling it.

Have a look in Event viewer for errors listed under Backup or TaskScheduler.

    Event Viewer results =
The remote drive was attached and there is no problem with it that I am aware of. I can access it normally through windows explorer

I checked all suggested settings in the link that you provided but there were no changes required.

If I schedule a task through task scheduler does that over ride Windows backup? If so, why - what's the problem with Windows backup?

No promises with this but after a lot of searching this is the only other suggestion I can find that may help fix the cause of the problem. This will check your hard drive for errors, leave the external drive/s unplugged while you do this:

Click Start, type cmd, right click on cmd at the top of the box and click run as administrator. A box will open.
On the prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and hit enter.

This may take a long time (hours) to run so be patient, do not interrupt it even it appears to have frozen.

Report back with your observations and try the scheduled back up again. Set it for a couple of minutes ahead of the time and wait to see what happens. If it fails tell me what the event viewer reports.

In your case I would check the power saving settings for the drive (& disable them). Is there enough free space?

Are the Volume Shadow Copy service and its dependecy services running?

There does not appear to be any obvious reason why this task is not running so it would seem that it can only be due to something not being set correctly. I found this set of instructions after a lot of searching for a resolution to a similar problem, it could all be down to this one setting.

Please Go to Task Scheduler console, navigate to Task Scheduler Library | Microsoft | Windows | Backup.

Double click the task, in the general page, click "Change User or Group... ".

Designate "administrator" account as the task running account.

    Hope this works:)

The back up schedule is set using 'Windows Back Up' which in turn would then be listed within Task Scheduler as a schedule. You can edit certain elements of the back up through Task Scheduler i.e. as above. Task Scheduler would not stop or overide Windows Back Up, as far as I know, a problem could only occur if another schedule is trying to use the back up destination at the same time.
