Hi folks,

I think I've picked up a trojan called Win32.Backdoor.ciadoor

My task manager was deactivated along with system restore, cmd, regedit and some other stuff, They all came up with messages along the lines of the system administrator has blocked them. I checked on a few forums and managed to get a couple of utilities up and running again but they went back as they were after rebooting. I ran AdAware which identified the trojan mentioned earlier and seemingly removed it, but it was back again after another reboot.

I've posted a HijackThis log below.

Can anyone help please?

Hi Marky

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.
• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks
Geri

Thanks Geri, I've done that. SDFix had a bit of trouble starting again when I rebooted in normal mode due to cmd being dissabled. I enabled cmd again using: "run > REG add HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System /v DisableCMD /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f" and SDFix seemed to go ok, however no log file was displayed. I did pull this file "Report.txt" from C:\sdfix but there doesn't seem to be much detail let me know if you need more.

For your information, I'm still having the same problems after running SDFix then restarting normally, ie cmd, task manager, regedit are all disabled. I also had a couple of errors for missing reg entries which I'm afraid I just ok'd without really thinking (sorry). Is this what you expected?

SDFix log:

SDFix: Version 1.76

Run by Erin - Thu 04/05/2007 - 9:35:20.73

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

Running From: C:\SDFix\SDFix

Hi
Please try running the SDfix again, it seemed to have missed a coulpe entries.
Please post a log if you get one and a new HJT log.

If you receive any errors please write them down and let me know what they are.

Thanks Gerri,
I'll try it as soon as I get home.

Is it possible that SDFix had problems when the computer was restarted due to cmd being disabled? It did try to start up when I restarted but couldn't properly because the command line was deactivated, although it did start itself when I'd reactivated cmd.

I take it that the SDFix logfile I posted was not what you wanted?

Mark.

SDFix said to run catchme.exe which found nothing.

Thanks again for your help, how do things look now? Everything seems to be up and running again but would appreciate any further advice.

Can I ask what exactly you were looking for, or what suspicious thing you found on my logs, the windows registries etc are a bit of a mystery to me but I like to try and know what is going on and what I'm doing.

Thanks,

Mark.

Hi Marky

SDFix should kill these...
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvhost.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvhost.exe

But it is not, for some reason.
This is a good file...
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe, See SVC.
The bad file has SCV

So we will have to kill them another way. I would have you do it manually, but I don't want you to kill the wrong file. So we will do it this way.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
• Save it to your desktop.
• Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
• Select:
• Delete on Reboot
• then Click on the All Files button.
• Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvhost.exe

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
• Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Then Please post a new HJT log.
Thanks
Geri

Hi Geri,

Sorry for the delay, I was away for a couple of days and haven't had a chance to get on my computer. Anyway, I had a look at the file you said and had a look for it on my HJT log where I couldn't find it, I also checked the path you specified and couldn't find it there either. I ran KillBox as you said, but when I hit the delete button I got the following error message (A windows Error box):

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry data has been removed by an external process

I then had to reboot manually. On booting up I got the same error messages as I recieved last time:

Windows cannot find...
Windows could not load or run...
Windows cannot find...
Windows could not load or run...
(Refering to scvhost.exe)

Would I be right in thinking that the file itself is no longer there, but the registry reference to it is and it is attempting to load it on boot up?

I have searched the registry and found the entry under

MyComputer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache

Is it safe to delete this entry from the registry now as it seems to be the only reference left to the file?

Thanks,

Mark.

Hi Mark
NO, Lets not be doing any registry editing just yet.

Lets try some other things first.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvhost.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvhost.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close HJT.

Please reboot and let me know if you still get the "can not" messages.

If not then post a new HJT log.

Thanks
Geri

Ok,
Done as you said, rebooted, error messages gone. Can't see any obvious problems with the system now. Ran an HJT scan immediately after reboot for the log file below:

Ok, done.

No sign of Search Assistant on add/remove progs. Removed the files you said using HJT. Can I ask what these files are?

Hi
The R's are linked to your internet browsing
I assume you use this..
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.gcal.ac.uk/student/

So the others are just hanging around not doing anything.

These are good files, just broken...
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Your log is clean, Any Probems? Let me know.

You can delete any tools you were asked to download, (SDFix, KillBox)There will be newer versions if ever needed again any way.

We have just a few more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 23,000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all,
and MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

6. Install WinPatrol to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine

Now just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly.

7. Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

8. ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only, Cleans out temporary files all the garbage you collect while surfing the web.

9. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

10. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
11. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
