    Ok I have a brand new Windows 2000 instalation(SP3)

And when I am connecting to the internet, via dialup (built in DUN) and browsing the internet after a couple minutes I recieve the error:
Once I recieve the error, a lot of simple functions cease to work. Like Copy, Paste, moving files, copying files, Internet Drop Down menus, buttons in IE.

I tracked down that it is adding entries in drwtsn32.log, but it is just gibberish to me. memory locations and hex stuff. I can paste it here is you want, I cleared it and captured one error.

I searched on google and support.microsoft.com but cannot find any fix.

All I have installed after Installing Win2k is
    -Office XP
-Norton System Works (which I updated)
    -Trillian Pro
    -Quicken 2003

This Error is occuring only when I am connected to Dial up. it happenes when only IE is running.

My version of IE is 6.0 128bit.

I have updated my virus scan (norton) and done a full scan.

I have also re-installed Windows 2000 Pro from scratch and it still happens.

    Any ideas?

We need the additional detail from the event log entry this error creates.

svchost.exe is a shell/wrapper that will be running from 2 to 7-8 different services and you will normally have 2-5 instances of svchost.exe running at once depending on what apps and services are active.

Right-click My Computer, left-click Manage, open event logs and check both the application and the system event logs. When you find one of the errors, open it and then click on the icon below the up/down arrows. That will send a text copy of the entire event to your clipboard and you can open a reply here and paste the contents.

Also a good idea to download, install, update, and run both ad-aware and then spybot and get rid of all the spyware they find. Links in my signature.

I will post the results you requested when I get home,

as for the spyware, is that still nessasary if I am still getting this error on a fresh Win2k SP3 install with no applications installed?

ill do it though, just in case.

If the PC is a fresh load, no 3rd party apps loaded, has never connected to the internet, and has no network connection to any other PC that has, then spyware shouldn't be the problem.

Otherwise it certainly could be giving you trouble.

If you have an internet connection and since you will want spyware killer apps real soon, couldn't hurt to get them now.

I am suffering the exact same problem. My system is clean instal on newly formatted drive. All I loaded on was m'board utilities, print driver (Epson), video card/monitor driver & ISP connection utility. I connected to net and got the error message described in previous posts. I will post a copy of the event log for you.

I read on the Microsoft website that this bug would be addressed in SP4. Received disc yesterday and loaded it on the system. Still got svchost error!

Also - I can only access my ISP icon when logged in as administrator. I have created Power User and User accounts but when I log in under these, ISP icon is not visible and no internet connection is recognised. Help!

Advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Couple of errors in that event log posting. Really need to see the raw log entry. No need for the long strings of 'data' at the end but all up to that point.

Easiest way is to open the event, click on the icon below the up/down arrows (puts a complete text copy in your clipboard), paste it in a reply here, and then delete all the 'data' below the first line.

And as noted Here, install symbols now that you have SP4 loaded. Helps at times in tracking down problems.

Not sure what you mean by raw log entry. What I posted is everything up to the data strings. Anyway I tried to get a new copy of the event log and I couldn't open the event. When I double clicked on it nothing happened. When I tried to close down the event viewer I got a message from Microsoft Management Console saying 'Close all property pages before closing Computer Management.'

Had to use Task Manager to end task and get out of the app.

Sorry, can't download symbols cos with my dial up connection the download time is over 4hrs!

Have to say that I'm thinking of reloading W98!

'raw event' simply meant an exact copy.

Have you run spyware removers (ad-aware and spybot from my signature)? AV software doesn't see spyware/malware usually.

Also if it were me I'd run a virus scan using an on-line scanner like RAV just in case a virus did sneak in and disable your onboard AV.
