    Environment: ... Desktop
    OS: ............. Win2k Professional Service Pack 4 (build 2195)
    Browser: ........ IE Version 6.00.2800.1106
    RAM: ............ 376 MB
Processor: ...... Intel Pentium II Celeron 433 Mghz
    primary mem. Cache: 32kb
    Secondary mem. Cache: 128 kb
    Bus clock: ........ 66 Mghz
Tot. disk space: .. 8.3 Gig
    Remaining space: .. 2.6 Gig

I have noticed since last month that my OS has been acting real too sluggish, maybe too many patches from MS - ah ah.
I took it to the shop because it's been rebooting itself.
I got a new power supply and a new processor but the slugginess persists. Should I reinstall
Win2000? And what would happen to my utilities and applications in the program files folder if I do so?
The PC has a USB 1.1. I'd like to install an external drive to back up the master drive instead of using CDs after CDs. If I do so, which components do I need for the USB in order
to make this backup installation possible?

    Thank you for any help.......

Have you looked at the EventLog?

What other maintenance do you regularly perform on your system?

I would recommend moving your paging file from your primary drive to a seperate partion on your existing drive or another newer drive. This should cure the sluggish issue.

    Regards

    Contrary to barnardos.. :)

When I had the welchia worm on my system, it was indeed sluggish. The internet did not work, but applications, etc, took about 4 times as long to load.

Maybe TonyT gets the 10 bucks... :)

Thank you all for your inputs. I performed all of the above and I have to report that no worms were found. I have ZoneAlarm and AVG runing whenever I am on the net.
Looking at the Eventlog - it's a real big file - here is a partial detail of that log:

    In the System Log area
    - Lots of errs referencing the cdrom and atapi
    - Few errors referencing DCOM - Dnscache
    - Warnings involving the hard drivr
    - Remaining are "information" referencing the eventlog,
    - RemoteAccess, Application popup

    In the Application Log
    - Warnings/errors referencing MsInstaller - True Vector Engine
    - Information referencing Diskeeper - WMDM PMSP Ser...

I must have gotten these errors due to the PC's rebooting itself mostly after being up for two hours or more. I am sure these episodes have taken quite some toll on the OS.
The PC's been out of the shop now and no problem but I still want to reinstall Win2k. Is there a good site I can go to to find information about uninstalling and reinstalling win2k?

You might have an actual hardware problem -- your hard drive.

Try to run a CHKDSK /R

    http://www.ultratech-llc.com/KB/?File=ScanDisk.TXT

You might not want to perform the reinstall on this particular hard drive depending on the result of this scan.

I'd also suggest dumping the contents of your event logs so you can get a fresh start. Much easier to deal with a smaller list of errors and warnings.

Do it just before you run the chkdsk /r that Logik007 suggested.
start~run~cmd then chkdsk /r and when it says it can't do the scan now, answer Y(es) to doing it at next reboot then boot.

Is indexing running? It will bog the system down.

Not only should you dump the event viewer log entries (save them if you really want to), but you should DEFRAG your HD on a regular basis!!!. Also download and install System Mechanic 4.0. You can get rid of lots of things like your .tmp, .log files, zero length files, ec. You can also clean your system registry with this program. It's free for 30 days and to buy it, it cost about $70. Or try easy cleaner. It's free, does about the same as system mechanic, but doesn't look as nice. Do a search on Google for easycleaner. System MEchanic can be downloaded at: iolo.com.

Deleting all that old junk, defragging your HD and cleaning your system registry go along way to getting the best performance out of your pc. Also as suggested, run the chkdsk /r. I find chkdsk to be the best drive problem solver around (Who says DOS is dead?? chkdsk has been around a LONG time).

The Command Line interface (CLI) in NT, 2000, XP and 2003 is not DOS.

Even though some of the comands have been ported over with the same names, it is a completely different environment.
