    Hi,
I am new here. I have heard many good things about win2k, people say it's very very stable. I recently switched to win2k I find occasionally it reboots itself. I did go check the event log, but i couldn't understand the code. Does it apply to you people as well? i mean it's not as stable as people say. Unlike the win98 when there is a fatal error you can still try to recover from end task... etc... I have turned off the automatic reboot feature when error occurs, but still, there is no way i can recover it, instead i just have to press the reset button.
THis problem only occurs in certain places, 1. when window is starting up, 2. shutting down 3. when i run netmeeting.
I know it's hard to find a fix for it... just want to let it out, it has been bothering me.
so, in your opinion, which OS is the best so far? and why? cuz i am thinking of switching.

Well, in order to help you we'd need the error code (shown in the event log).

Also which service pack do you have applied?

I'm running XP now, but Windows 2000 SP2 was just a bit more stable then Windows XP.

    Thanks for the reply.
I do have SP2, and all the critial updates. Here is the last error code:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini011702-01.dmp.

This occurred when i tried to run netmeeting (i was running quite a few programs at the same time, maybe insufficient memory? i have 256MB RamBus pc 800). Thanks you very much.

    the rebooting

2000 is designed to reboot itself instead of BSOD. There is something wrong with your system. Crack open the case, make sure all your cards are seated firmly, pop out the memory and switch it around to different slots and reseat it. verify that all the internal cables are tight.

What kind of pc is it.
    Rambus = Intel

is it a intel motherboard? I find intel to be very stable hardware...

Did you upgrade or fresh install?

Did you fdisk your partitions and remake them with 2000 cd?

    Let me know...

    Tek

Thanks for the reply Tek. I am not a computer expert so I don't want to mess around with the hardwares. Hardwares should work just fine.
I have intel p4 with Asus P4T-E MB, 256 MB rambus.
It's a fresh install. I boot directly from my CD Rom drive and partition the hard drive from there (NTFS).
Auto reboot problem seems frequent, I remember reading some similar threads on this board before.
I did hear people saying win2k is very very stable, yes it's stable in a way, but not as stable as i expected.

i am also new to 2000 pro,I notice it does reboot unexpectedly

    >>2000 is designed to reboot itself instead of BSOD

    what is "BSOD "?

i upgraded from ME, but going to do a fresh install,as thats only way to get rid of Mcafee agent(i assume the reason why i cannot download the macfee active shield updates?)

    whats best way install?
    ,i have 40 gig maxtor,2 partitions,

i am going to FDISK C,reformat & install 2000 on C, i assume my second partition will be left alone,as I have data on it i dont want wiped by an install?

Tomako - no need to be a hardware expert. Just shut down, remove power cord, remove cover. Then all you will be doing is removing cards and replacing them firmly in the same place. Removing cables from where they are plugged in and replacing them firmly in the same spot. If you do one at a time, you should be fine. While you are at it, try leaving the cover off for a few days and see if you problem vanishes. Then put the cover back on and see if it re-appears. If so, you have a heat problem. Bad fan, not enough fans, something.

Jazzbo - BSOD = the dreaded "Blue Screen Of Death" that gives you all those strange error messages and requires a reboot anyway.

And FWIW, even though you are always told that you can "upgrade" from one OS to another, I have had enough problems over the years to not do that any more. Save stuff you need and do a fresh, clean install. If you went from ME to 2K, you probably have FAT32 for a file system. Do it NTFS next time and you will be sure you have gotten a fresh start - and have better security too.

    Re W2k reboots

I had this problem when windows kept rebooting, and the culprit was Nortons antivirus 2001 or 2002. I have removed them from my system and after 3 weeks it has never rebooted...hope this helps

Well, how full is "full "???

Do a search for, and delete the *.dmp files... You could have a few Megs if your pc reboots with a bugcheck often.....

Thanks for all the help. Well, the thing is that my computer doesn't reboot every time, only happens maybe once every 10 times, so it's hard to identify the problem by swipping my cards around.
By the way, I am thinking of doing dual boot win98 and win 2k , can someone kind enough to show me a clear instruction? from what i know i will have to install win 98 first, then win2k... I have no experience installing win 98, I know win 98 can't be boot directly from CD-rom.. so maybe i have to use win98 boot disk and format my c: and have it partition to 2 and then install win98 in C: ...then use 98 to run win2k CD... and install it in D? correct?? what i concern the most is that since win2k and win98 can't see each other then isn't it hard to remember what file is in which OS??
Sorry i know I have way too many questions, thanks all.

    my own dual boot computer

I have two hard drives, my old win 98 is installed on one, and I installed win2000 on the other and whenI want to use win98, I just go to the bios and change hard drive boot up sequence. A small pain in the butt but I can live with it. Partitioning scared me! I tried it once with Partition Magic and totally ******* up my drive.

Oh by the way is there a win2000 equivalent of scandisk? Can't find it in the system tools and imagine there has gotta be an equivalent I don't know about!

Hi there. I want to dual boot my computer as well, as far as i know it's better to install win98 first then win2k. I wonder if win98 can be boot directly from CD-rom just like win2k?? and do all the partitioning and formating there??

Yes, there is a scandisk, go to my computer and right click on the drive you wish to scan then go to properties. You should find it there. Hope it helps.

Thanks Tomako, that's exactly what I needed to know! Boy there is a lot to learn about win2000. I couldn't check the c drive because of this error:

The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. Do you want to schedule this disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer "

What the heck is THAT all about??? I have it checking drive D now with no problem.

    Thanks!!

    Hi again,
I have that too... BUT i think that's normal, i m not positive. Just click yes, the scan disk will perform next time time you restart your computer...
