Installed W2K, tried to install the modem device sfwr with CD and Win2000. Go to Control Panel/Add Hardware and when I search for the model, Aztech 56 K ISA, Have Disk, there is no setup/install or .exe files in the CD.
Then when I choose D: in the Browse, Win2000 message: The specified location (D) does not contain info about your hardware.

In other words, the CD Rom won't install/setup. tried to go thru Run/D:\setup, Run:\D:install -- nothing.

Ditto for the ALS Sound Series package. Tried to install the Asound Express for the PCI sound card and get the same message.

Ditto the VIA Service Pack (97).

What's a digital signature? Get a message "The software you are about to install does not contain a MS digital signature. No guarantee will work with Windows. Huh?
    Help!

In answer to my own question:

Before Win2000, I had Win98SE and all devices worked with 98SE.

Could it be that these devices are not HCL, meaning they are not Win2000 compatible, even though their drivers have a Win2000 folder?

Cannot scan disk either. Went to the Properties/Tool tab and get this message:

The disk check could not be performed bec exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained.

If you are trying to do a disk check on your system disk or any disk that has active stuff running you will get that message. You should also get the option to have the check run at next boot. If not,
    start~run~cmd
chkdsk /f (or chkdsk /r if you want a surface check as well)
and you will be told it can't be done but also given a Y/N option to do at next boot. Enter Y and reboot.
