It's time to get out of the peer-to-peer environment and go with a server....I'm not an expert by any means, but have been given the title of Sys Admin of our small...23 computer company. We have grown out of the peer-to-peer stuff and need to move up to a server based network. We don't grow very fast...1-2 computers a year? So I was considering SBS 2000. Does anyone have any good reasons to use Windows 2000 Server over SBS ?
Your opinion or links to other info would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks,

Considering that SBS is 2K server /w some additional M$ goodies thrown in for much less than buying them seperately, if you need SQL and the other Back Office extras, you'd probably be lots better off with it. It is pretty well a small network in a box.

If you had a larger network you might need some of the load balancing, clustering, support for more than 4 CPUs, and other featuers you get with advanced server or data center server but unless you specifically need them, I doubt you'd seen any benefit.

    Many Thanks!

Thanks, that a good confirmation...I was thinking along the same lines. I don't think we will get beyond the 50 user max anytime soon, and I like the fact that is really is a network in a box. I will need some help setting things up though. Do you know of any good site or books .....or classes really, that I could take to help me on my journey??

    Thanks,

SBS has a pretty good installation routine (for an MS product) and will do the vast majority of the work for you

One piece of advice is to make sure the server has some sort of Internet connection as you install it otherwise DNS will assume that it's a root server and all kinds of probs will occur until you remove the root forward lookup zone - been there bought the t-shirt :) :)

Dont install SQL unless you need it as it eats resource

Do keep Exchange's logs and databases on seperate drives or face the V dire consequences if it all goes Pete Tong (as we say in England)
