    Hi,
Need some help for the following scenario. A LAN exists with the following details.
    1. One gateway router.
    2. 2 Ethernet switches.
    3. Less than 30 hosts all running Windows XP pro.[all on same subnet]
    4. 2 printers.
    5. Currently we have a single windows workgroup with user accounts configured on each machine.
What I want from the network.
    1. Their wont be any user accounts configured individually on all hosts. Instead all user accounts will be on a central host on the LAN. When a user logs on to his machine that machine will check with the central host before allowing the user to use the machine.
    2. Configure access privileges for each user on the central host.
    3. Updates for software’s like adobe, antivirus software’s and windows updates are downloaded to the central pc and distributed to the other hosts on the lan. [So we don’t have to download the same update several times]
    4. If software needs to be deployed on all hosts on the LAN I can do it by installing it only on the central machine.
    I need to the above
    1. Without using Windows server?

That’s about it. Any help is much appreciated and thanks in advance.

You need a Windows Server to achieve your goals. Something you said you didn't want.

The closest you can get to achieving what you want is to use limited users accounts on each workstation and a few scripts to set policies for each computer. But you will still have to go to each workstation and deploy any software, policies, etc. And logon policies would be controlled by each computer's policies.

You could use a "central" xp workstation to host the scripts, software and files for use by the other computers. You'd have to use file sharing to be able to distribute them to each computer and you'd have to use remote desktop or similar application to execute or install stuff on each computer.

To do this all without a server operating system is a lot of work and setup. It's far cheaper to buy a windows server than to devote the man hours to accomplishing half your goals using an xp computer as a workaround.

You can find MS SBS online for under 700 bucks and even get an HP Proliant system for about 600 bucks. 1300 for everything you need is far cheaper than 70 man hours setting up xp workarounds which do half the job and must be repeated again and again rather than auto deployed.
