If XP was installed using the NTFS format, the only relatively simple way to get Win98 installed is to repartition and reformat the harddrive (wipe it clean) with the XP CD, then boot up with a Win98 boot disk and install Win98.

You must then get all the Win98 drivers for the hardware that Windows couldn't install automatically and install them manually, since WinXP drivers are seldom (as in "never" in my experience) able to function with Win98.

To find out what the file system format is, open My Computer, select the C: drive, look in the left-hand pane at the bottom and next to "File System" it will say either NTFS or FAT32.

The best route to take, in my opinion, is to change the way XP looks to what you're used to so you will be more comfortable with it. Go to Control Panel>Display>Themes tab and change the theme to Windows Classic.

XP is far superior to 98 in terms of stability...and other things...and you will probably find you like it once you get used to it. ;)

    Miz,
HOw much is GoB paying you to plug XP? I have more problems with XP machines than with 98, but almost every PC out here is running 98. I amnot looking forward to a new shipment of 20-odd PCs for a client's office, with XP home installed (their specs, not mine).

I'd have to second what Merlin's already said.

Miz gave a rock-solid reply (as always)... then offered up some helpful advice on how to get a better feel for XP.

Thanks, Merlin and Daisy. I started to reply to Ryder but decided that getting into a flame war over what is really just personal preference (OS) was pointless...and childish. :)

    Strange ...... ..... !

I had an old LapTop given to me.
It had NT4 on NTFS which I didn´t want.

I decided to install Win98 instead.
I simply booted from a Win98 (or WinME, I don´t remember) start disk and FDISK asked if I wanted to remove the non-DOS partitions.

My answer was Ohh Yes! ...... :D ...... and history they were.

    I formated to FAT32 and installed Win98.
