Resolved Win XP IE8 Shortcuts won't open

I'm using Windows XP SP 3 with IE 8 also Google Chrome. I am having no problems opening anything in Google Chrome. Bit as of about a month ago when I click on desktop icons or favorites, I'm having problems with failing to open and freezing - Ctl-Alt-Del is the only way out, it shows the programs as "Not Responding" Someone mentioned disabling Ajax Connectionevents using Regedit - don't like doing that so thought I'd check here first to see if anyone has a solution.

As I say all is well with Google Chrome but I have always used IE and like it.

Any ides of what to try next ?

 

Hi reknaw, Have you gone to IE Help > Internet Explorer Help > Index Handling Errors > Reset IE to Default settings when it was installed? Neil.

 

I have tried Microsoft "Fix it" but the problem is it says it doesn't cover my system on a lot of the problems I'm having. I'll try some of your other suggestions.

 

OK... reset seems to have improve my problem almost 100% - my problem now is I can't remember how to mark it "RESOLVED" a Senior moment
