I have been using the built in FAX in XP Home for over a year. It just stopped working: it gets the dial tone and appears to be trying but after 60 seconds, I get the message: no answer. Tried the repeating for two days and no change.

Spoke to the recipient and they are having no problem. I used a regular FAX machine and the call went right through.

Go to Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > and check your modem for problems using the diagnostics found under Properties of the modem. There is also a troubleshooter in there.

You can also check the modem for any yellow bots in Device manager. Perhaps uninstall/reinstall the modem from there.

Perhaps then go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall/reinstall the Fax Service.

I read somewhere that updating to SP2 could cause problems with XP fax programs on Compaq Presarios if an update was not applied before applying SP2. The fix is to uninstall SP2, apply the fix and then reinstall SP2. Could this be your problem? Maybe it also happens with other computers. You might want to check your computers website.
