I have just installed Win XP Pro on a new system with a 56K PCI card fax modem (Trust). When I try to install, I get the usual drop down box to install manufacturers drivers but when I enter the details of the drive and file containing the driver (.inf file and others) the message no driver file at this location (or similar) or, sometimes, the 'Next' box is shadowed out and not obtainable. My system shows only 1 Comm port (com1), could this have a bearing on the problem and if so how do I solve it ? Any help or suggestions much appreciated

Did xp autodetect your modem and request the drivers?

Is a modem showing up in device manager?

Have you tried this driver set?:
    http://www.trust.com/service/driver...=WINXP&from=product&driver=1000001256&ddsub=1

I down loaded this and extracted to folder "my name of choice "

It extracted a main folder named "modem" and several subfolders with various versions of windows subfolders, "winxp " being one of the folders

Based on best case senarios (other problems will require different tactics) :
Had I had your modem I would have pointed or browsed to "My folder name of choice ">modem>winxp when xp requested drivers, (if modem was autodetected). If not I would have opened device manager and expanded my modem (or "other/unknown ") category and clicked on the drivers tab and selected the "update drivers" button.

    Inside this folder is:
    C:\aholder\modem\winxp\ham50.sys
    C:\aholder\modem\winxp\mdmham50.inf
    C:\aholder\modem\winxp\migrate.dll
    C:\aholder\modem\winxp\ambienth.cat

NOTE:If xp is looking for a specific file such as the mdmham50.inf, I would have pointed it (browsed) there.

    xp modem driver

Thanx for your help. I've downloaded the drivers but the problem still persists. I think it is something with my basic setup.
When I try to update drivers. I can browse to the drive, to the folder containing the sub folders and to the subfolder but can not see or point to the files contained in the folder.
When I enter the full path to the driver file concerned ( and I have confirmed it in explorer) I get the message ' The location entered doesn't exist or cannot be reached'.
I can go about 8.1/2 but not the full 9 yards. How frustrating.
    H.E.L.P!

Uninstall. Turn off the computer. Change the slot. Reboot.

    xp modem driver (registered bg9208)

PC recognises modem as "found new hardware installed ". But when I try to install the drivers I still have the same problem.
I can find the driver files in explorer, (.sys and.inf), but in the installation window I can only open down to the sub folder and not to the files.
When I type in the full path down to the filename the message " no files found" (or something similar).
The driver files are correct as per manufacturers website.
There seems to be a problem with the installation process itself. If there any work-around that I could use. In desperation!

Ideas.....Make sure you have set a restore point for yourself prior to trying some of these.
    1----
You are logged on to an account with admin rights or privilege's aren't you?
You could try logging in as the administrator and do this.
    2----
Restore file association for *.inf. Download it, unzip it and click on the reg patch to merge the data into current registry:
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_inf_assoc.zip
    3----
Don't type the complete path and include mdmham50.inf. Just type down to the winxp folder. "Winxp" being the subfolder of the "Modem" folder of the folder "name of choice" that you extracted the drivers to.
    4----
Here's one way (Probably one of the more "scenic routed" ways. I seem to have the knack for picking a less direct route. It will get ya' there but it's a toss up whether it was the most time efficient best laid plain) :
-Right click on your desktop "my computer" icon and select "properties "
-Click on your "Hardware Tab "
-Click on your "Device Manager Button "
-Double click on your "modem category "
-Double click on your "modem "
-Click on the "Driver Tab "
-Click on the "update Driver Button "
-Select "install from a list or specific location "
    -Select "Don't search I will choose "
-Hopefully your modem is listed and you can "highlight it "
    -Click "have disk button "
-Browse to the folder you installed the drivers to "*\modem\winxp "
-The mdmham50.inf is the only file listed because its an inf extensioned file this pop-up is looking for
-Double click on the "mdmham50.inf" file
-A pop-up will happen with the path already filled in
-Just click the "okay button ". A window with the name of your modem will appear
-Highlight the "named modem" and click "next "
(Hopefully you can take it from there. This is as far as I was willing to go in Your install process via the download I had previously done)
    5-----
See lower sectioned category called "Tips and Pointers ". This will eliminate any "install shield" problems, plus walk you through other tasks that may interfere with an install.
    http://consumer.installshield.com/faq.asp?

Via >control panel>administrator tools: make sure the windows installer service does not have a problem or has been stopped or disabled.
    6-----
As a long shot drum down to the mdmham50.inf file and right click on it and select "Install ". I'm not sure if this will work but it may be worth a shot.

    --------Back later. Got to go.------

A few hours later but I'm back...
Please go to the Trust site and confirm your product. The drivers, my link sent you to, were for the specific name you had used previously, "56k pci card fax modem ". This is just in case you where not specific enough. I just find it strange that the inf file will not show up when walking through the wizards hoops yet you can find and see the inf file when you look for it yourself.

    Ann,
you're a gem. I followed your 'scenic route' et Voila! - it worked!.
Can't thank you enough. I knew my way around Win98 but XP is a different can of worms - I guess I have a learning curve to overcome.
If you're ever in France visit our Chambre D'Hote, campsite www.leschenauds.com. For you and yours free accomodation for a couple of weeks.
Where's the best place to find a xp tutorial ?

    Yahoo!

    Hi bg9208,

Wow, two weeks in France. I just spent the last 5 minutes visualizing this and even that was relaxing. Your better than a soak in "Calgon ". Now I'll have to spend a few more minutes trying to fix the grammar, syntax and spelling in my previous thread ^ above. Sheesh, I must have been more tired than I thought when I wrote that. Two weeks in France may be just what I need. :) Oh well...I'm so glad this worked for you. Thank you for your kind offer, your most welcome and thanks for updating your post with the final outcome. Now I'm off to visit your link and imagine myself away for a few more minutes at least.

bg9208Please post with more problems, pick an easy one that even I can solve. I am daydreaming of a peaceful vacation in France, the same as Ann is. Your part of the world looks beautiful.

Ann you jumpstarted my "remembery" (got that from my 4 year old!) and I right clicked the inf file for my digital camera to "install" and Presto! I owe you one, too, but I don't have anything sweet like bg9208, just a bunch of rotten kids... However, if you want them, I will box them up and ship them, directly. LOL :D

    Thanks, Ann!
    Johanna

XP tutorial= the BBS, of course!
