Two computers on my home wireless network. One Desktop (wired to router) running Win VISTA Home Premium the second computer is a Laptop (wireless connection) running WinXP SP3. When I try to copy and past files FROM the VISTA machine to the WinXP SP3 machine I get a message stating I need permission. I am the only user of this machine and I have Administrative Rights.

I have no problem at all copying and pasting FROM the WinXP SP3 machine to the VISTA machine.

There are quite a few settings you might need to check.

What is the exact wording of the "permission" request and check the title of the box for what program is asking the permission.

    Here is some basic information
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

One thing that might be at the core is that Vista "knows" Windows XP, but because Vista is more modern, Win XP thinks Vista is foreign. Vista has "Network Discovery ", so it investigates a network first. Windows XP relies on network details (like the network name, eg. WORKGROUP and maybe the Subnet Mask other computers are using).

If there is access across a network, the system needs to be assured that it is a trusted user or administrator on the network before it will allow that user access. At the same time, be careful not to punch too many holes in your security so that outsiders might gain access.

EDIT: Have you tried connecting the laptop to the router with a cable? Any difference?
