In the last few days a strange thing has happened. After Widows XP is loaded, the Win/System32 folder is automatically opened on the desktop. That's strange in itself but also, over the same few days, the computer has crashed several times (blue screen with long error message) as I opened some email in Thunderbird (latest edition).
Nothing like this has happened in 2 years - no crashes, etc. No new hardware and no new software matches the timing.
Wondering if anything rings any bells with anyone on this.

It is caused by a minor problem in the Registry .....

Here's the simple fix from Kelly Theriot .....

    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,67825-order,1-page,1/description.html

This is the more complex MS fix ....

    Re. the BSOD's ....

Set up the computer so that it does not automatically restart on system failure .....

BTW I am on holiday for a couple of weeks as of Saturday so please do not expect a response from me after tomorrow :)

Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings ....

Under System failure uncheck 'Automatically restart' and under Write debugging information select 'Kernel memory dump' from the dropdown list and OK out.

The computer will now show the BSOD in the event of a System failure giving details of the Stop message and the contents of the memory will be dumped to disk.

Run the dump data through our Dump Data Collection Tool and post the log here (copy/paste).

Unfortunately these logs require expert knowledge to analyze and there are only a few members (who occasionally visit WindowsBBS.com) that have the depth of knowledge necessary. Other members can make observations and suggestions as to how you might proceed toward finding the cause ....

Win Sys 32 bootup problem solved

Big thanks. The first link and solution didn't find or fix the problem. The MS link was the ticket. http://support.microsoft.com/support.../q170/0/86.asp
For anyone else who encounters this, I went to regedit and to the Hkey Local machine, software, microsoft, windows, current user, run.
Looking at the entries there was a default entry with just " ", no other detail between the quote marks. Deleted that and the problem ceased.

What is always hard with MS input is the lack of understandable explanation.

I did a restore point backup first, to be safe. Also, made the changes you suggested in case of further crashes.

    Thanks again for the help.

    Best,
    Gary
