A friend has asked for my help with an "application error ", sometimes "internal application error" whenever trying to use Win Media Player. That is the entire error message after which nothing happens. It was working fine until recently. I've hit a brick wall so here I am.

I had him try to uninstall/reinstall media player but it isn't listed in add/remove or Win setup>multimedia. I also had him run an on line test and according to it media player isn't installed. I had him download and install Media Player 7, the install seemed to work but it still says there is no media player installed and he is still getting the same error message when trying to start it. I also had him run a virus scan, both local and on line. I'm still waiting for the results of that test but don't really think that is the problem since he updates and runs scans often.

He's running Win 98 SE {not an upgrade}. Any ideas or thoughts would be welcomed. Thanks in advance.

I found these suggestions with a groups.google.com search. Hope it helps:

    To reinstall WMP 7.1:

Subject: does media player 7.01.00.3055 work on windows 98?
    Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsmedia

I had the same thing. Download 7.1 from Microsoft and install it. During the installation a window will ask "upgrade newer components only" or "Reinstall all components" select the latter reinstall. This worked for
me after a many of tries.

To revert back to WMP 6:

Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup -> Multimedia (or Accessories, can't remember) -> Media Player. It may not show up anywhere, but there should be MPLAYER2.EXE in your Program Files\Windows Media Player folder. Run it and associate the files you want from options.

    [that would be View/Options/Formats]

Thats not bad advice, but theres an even better way...

    Go to this page:

    http://forms.real.com/real/realone/...true&src=020919realhome_1,020925r1cp_choice_1

and download the RealOne player. Its free and its good. Whats more, with RealOne you can still play tracks that are in WMT format. So with RealOne you can see both RealMedia files and WMT files (as well as MP3, MPEG4, QT, and just about any other format out there), but in WMP you can't see the RealMedia ones, just the WMT... WMP9.0 includes lots of DRM technology as well. And I for one would rather that DRM tech not be on MY computer :) . The newest RealPlayer, RealOne 2.0 is so good, I'm surprised anyone is really interested in WMP anyways. And I'm not exaggerating. Try it out, you'll be impressed.
