It has been a while since you posted so I hope you have found a solution in the meantime.

I have set up a Logitech webcam only once or twice for my daughter's computer.

I think you will have problems installing it on Win 98 (First Edition), check about it requiring Win 98SE.

I have seen suggestions that it needs DirectX 9.0.

I suggest looking at any other software that may want to "control" or runs similar hardware. You may want to uninstall any "Messenger" programs (which are the main "vehicle" of it's use) until you get it installed. Old software would be my main area of interest, even any other Logitech software that was installed for another piece of equipment.

PS May as well check for updated drivers for your USB controllers. You will find these included in the chipset/motherboard driver updates.

PPS See the word CODEC, they are related to media players.

Trying your suggestions, but ran into another problem... called up (Find Files) DirectX, & found two folders, both empty... attempted to download the latest Directx 9 s/w, from (WIN/DirectX) site & got alert '....(you have latest version...)' , therefore no update allowed. After 'Find Files.. Delete all references' to DirectX, it keeps showing up w/0 bytes installed!? need advice.. tx:eek:

Ouch! Don't try to delete DirectX or you will cripple your system. It is an integral part of Windows. You can't even uninstall it, so if you have the latest version, unless you can reinstall it, you can't do anything else. You may find third party programs on the internet that claim they revert to previous versions, but you are playing with fire if you use them. If MS say it cannot be uninstalled I wouldn't try it.

I have had one or two problems with DirectX. After reading the possibilities of how to overcome them I have eventually reformatted or installed a previous backup, I don't like the thought of having a system that may have "faults" lurking in the background.

If you have the latest version of DirectX, you should look elsewhere for the possible cause. If DirectX is not functioning properly you will see problems in several areas, not only that you could not get the webcam to function. You "need" a recent version of DirectX for the webcam to work, it is just that it won't work using older versions. The webcam does not work because of DirectX, you just require a recent version.

Look into the other areas I mentioned, uninstall any messenger programs. Look through the listings in Add/Remove Programs for MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AOL Messenger, AIM, etc. Uninstall those, then just install the latest version of MSN Messenger [install recent versions of the other messenger programs after you get the webcam working (if they are needed)].

If you want a more thorough way of removing the software and drivers, boot into safe mode, find the uninstallers in Add/Remove Programs or in the Logitech listing of Start -> Programs. Remove those, go to Device Manager and remove any listings there. When you boot to normal mode follow the setup instructions very carefully (it might say not to connect the webcam until a certain point in the installation).
