Tried to download Windows 98 Update. Froze. Had to reboot system.

System freezes after Win98 intro screen and screen saver. Will not bring up desktop icons or task bar. Can't do anything past this. Have tried rescue disk and safe mode. Need help!

bearcat--There has not been a Win98 update (from Microsoft) for over three years. What update are you referring to?
But, most importantly, can you get to a MS-DOS prompt, type scanreg /restore, click Enter and then chose to restore a rbxxx.cab file (xxx=digits like 001) with a date prior to the update and/or problem? If yes, choose that rbxxx.cab file and follow instructions. With luck you may be able to restore your PC to its settings before the update/problem.
The way you reach a DOS prompt depends on your PC. It involves holding down Control, or F8 or F1 when you start up.
If that works, please respond to the question in the first sentence.

Thanks jim. But, it didn't work. Posted above as bearcat, from my husband's pc. But, I was able to use my Win98 startup disk that I created to get to dos. From there, I went to C:/setup and reinstalled Win98. Is working OK, now (as you see).

As for Windows updates, my husband's on a network that requires they update their office pc's frequently. Both 98's and 00's. He did both yesterday.

T&S--Glad to hear all is well. It seems the update may not have been the problem, but in the future, remember to tell us which update was installed just before a problem. We might have been able to suggest a fix a little less painful/specific than reinstalling Windows.
The most recent updates have involved IE, OE, Media Player, etc. Win98, itself, has not been "updated" on the Critical Update site for years, but of course MS will sell you WinXP!! ;)
