I bought a computer with win98 pre-installed. I want to format the c: drive to get rid of all the rubbish I have built up over time and give the computer a fresh start.

How do I go about if as I didn't get a win 98 CD when I bought the computer?

    Many thanks

    You Don't ......

At least you don't if you want to have Win 98 as an operating system. No CD - no OS. You can format the drivewith a boot disk, but then what are you going to do?

    ;)

If this is the case why are so many computers sold with OS pre-installed

Even my new computer has the OS pre-installed

Most new ones come with a Recovery CD that allows the system to be recovered to the original condition. Others place the recovery files on the hard drive in a hidden diagnostic partition and do not supply a CD unless you request and pay for same.

Some Recovery CD's even allow repair over-installs, some don't.

Some people buy used computers that have systems installed on them. Generally they do not get an install disk with such bargains and many times the copy is illegally sold since it may be on another machine/machines.

    :)
