I have an IBM Aptiva E5D Pentium II with a 400 MHz
processor and an 8 GB hard drive. The computer
came with an Aptiva recovery disk that will format
and reinstall the Win 98 operating system and all
the software that came with the Aptiva.

I have a 2.6 GHz Pentium IV computer with Win XP.
I have installed a Trios Hard drive Selector on
it. This allows you to run up to 3 hard drives,
    each independant of each other.

I have a spare 4.1 GB hard drive that I will
connect to the trios selector. Then I would
like to format it and use the Aptiva recovery
disk to install win 98 and the software that
came with my IBM. I have a CD disk for my new
XP computer and it has all the drivers for
Win 98 on it as well as drivers for other systems.

CAN I DO THIS? The 4.1 GB hard drive will not
be connected with the XP hard drive. I see driver
conflicts but I can fix these. I may have to
install Dos first to get the CD drive to work, but
I believe the Win 98 recovery disk will also make
    The CD drives work.

I want to do this to be able to use Win 98 that
runs some of my programs that Win XP will not
    run.

    Any imput will be welcome.

    Thanks, Jerry

My first thought - I wonder if a Recovery disk will work on a drive that does not have the original OS installed? Somehow I doubt it - the Recovery disk may well do a spot of checking - otherwise it is a free for all OS?

I have never owned/used a Recovery disk, no doubt others with experience in this arena will chip in.

The Netvista recovery CDs certainly work so I see no reason why the Aptiva shouldn't.

However, any licensed software (e.g. ECDC, Lotus, etc.) will not load as the mobo is checked for the IBM "signature "

The new computer may be too powerful for Windows 98. I remember reading somewhere there was a 2.4 GHz limit for 98.

The other problem may be does IBM have the 98 drivers for the new computer?

Win98 has one problem with processors faster than 2.1 ghz. You will more than likely need to get an update of ndis.vxd. You'll know if you need the update when you first try to boot to windows. You'll end up with the boot process stopping with a windows protection error. MS has an updated file available but you may have to call them to get it. That's the way it used to be anyway. I have win98 installed on a computer with a 2.4 ghz processor and ran into this problem. It runs great with the new file though. If you can't find the file and you want it, I've got the file here and would be willing to email you a copy if you want it.
