Hi,Can anyone help.Even after a reformat and clean installation the defragmentation utility in 98 refuses to work,it just hangs with no change in the percentage of files defragmented. There is nothing in startup or anything running in the background and there are no screensavers enabled.Any suggestions.

Will it complete in Safe Mode? If so, there is something running in the background, well hidden.

Something that many overlook is their firewall. If it's set up to write alerts to a log, it will cause defrag to start over every time it writes to the log.

Oh, yeah...Windows ME's defrag utility works a lot faster...and some say better...than the one in Win98. You can find a link to download it and instructions on how to use it once you've got it on this page. I use the ME defragger on my 98 system and the speed is amazing compared to 98's slow-as-molasses version.

    RE 98 DEFRAG

Many thanks for your prompt reply, the problem is actually being experienced by a colleague of mine and as she is little more than a novice I doubt if she has tried safe mode. The link is very interesting none the less and I appreciate it.I will pass on the info-regards pcfanatic.
