Win 98 causes a failure and requires reboot and verifying each thing loaded on start when CPU Speeds are above 2.1 gig. The file NDIS.VXD is the problem and a new Nov edition must be installed. The recommended file on MS is 243199us8.EXE, BUT it is NOT an executable file. If you run it as a EXE it will tell you "Not for your System ". After 8 hours of searching I found on the Intel site how to use the file. It is a non executable ZIP file and must be unzipped. After unzipping you must use DOS to copy the file from its unzip location to Windows\system.
A search for ndis.vxd returned a lot of sites but none that were of much value. The Intel method seems to be working on my 2.9 gig Celeron.

MS has a hotfix available for this but you need to call them to get it. I've ran into the same thing myself and the fix does work. If you call MS and it turns out you can't get it anymore I have the file somewhere around here.

I don't know to what extent MS is supporting 98 anymore but if you can't get it or if you just don't want to mess with that I could probably ((hopefully anyway) dig it up and email it to you if you wanted. If they still support it, I don't believe they'll charge you anything for it but I wouldn't quote me on that. :) I can't confirm it but I've seen it on the net that it's just a version of the ndis.vxd that comes with WinME. If it would happen that I can't find the fix here I could send you the file from the puter I have it on. It would be worth a try. Copy it to your windows system folder in DOS. It couldn't hurt anything. It's up to you what you want to do with it from here. ;)

That hotfix is for Win95 and Win98 Standard Edition. Win98 Second Edition and WinME don't have that issue. My Win98SE has version 4.10.2222 ndis.vxd. Any version below 4.10.2000 has the problem.
