Have WIN98 on an old computer and the mouse suddenly doesn't work. On boot, get the error msg "Windows did not detect a mouse - yadda yadda yadda." I click OK and the system logs on but then, of course, the only INPUT DEVICE available is the keyboard ... ick. I checked the DEVICE MGR tab and there is no MOUSE/MICE option listed there at all now.

Anybody got a clue what happened and more importantly how to fix it?

It's a USB mouse with a PS/2 adaptor. I've tried it in the USB ports as well as with the PS/2 adaptor and thus far no soap. I've even gone so far as to reinstall WIN98 over itself (which I know ain't good, but it's an old computer and etiquette be darned).

Just trying not to scrap the old thing since this issue is actually the only thing wrong with it.

If it doesn't work in either PS/2 or USB port, the mouse is probably toast. If you have another mouse laying around, give it a try. If not, maybe you can borrow one from somebody to see if it works?

    Hi,
I see Zander just stated what I was going to say, check using another PS/2 mouse.

Check that the facia plate around the connector on the motherboard is not stopping the plug from seating all the way.

Trying another mouse and checking that the PS2 connector is fully lodged in its socket is a good idea. You should also be aware that not all systems will recognize a PS2 mose that is actually a USB mouse with an adapter.

If this doesn't resolve your problem, boot into safe mode (keep tapping F8 and select safe mode from the options). Navigate to the control panel - device manager - system. Expand Mice and other pointing devices and remove all entries shown. Close and reboot.

    ;)
