win 98 acting strange on restart

    I just updated my AVG & was instructed to restart.
    When I did so, I got a message "Windows Protection Mode" and was instantly sent to safe mode. Tried several things, but couldn't find anything wrong. Could not restart normally for several attempts. Finally, did a virus scan, which found nothing, so I shut down and restarted again. This time, it started just fine....................What happened and what can I do to prevent it in the future.

    Besides never installing another application, I don't you can do anything.

    Windows has to do a ton of things when it boots up. Sometimes it doesn't do a good job.
