win 95 to win 2000 Pro

Hi There,

On three separate networks we have had a need to connect a small number of Win 95 clients (between 4-7) to a 2000 Pro workstation acting as a small server.

We have absolutely no problems with 98,me,2000 or xp clients but Win 95 clients will rarely log on and if they do will eventually drop off after a short while.

We can see the server in network neighbourhood or find it by name or ip address without any problem but constantly get either:-

"This device does not exist on the network" (even though we can see it !!!)

or

"an extended error has occured" when we click on the 2000 server or, having rarely connected, when we drill down to a lower folder.

The Win 95 clients can however, log onto each other without any probs. at all.

As I say if we then introduce a Win 98 or xp laptop to the equation we can log onto anything.

Am I missing something..................???

Sounds like you don't have the latest version of DUN (dial-up-networking) for Win95 loaded on the PCs. I think the latest for 95 is DUN 1.3. Be careful not to get the DUN 1.4 since it is 98/ME specific and doesn't do well on 95. Usually won't work at all.

And yes, I did notice you are on a wired network rather than dial-up but the DUN update replaces most of the networking apps on the 95 PC.
