A friends Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5307 AMD A6 has Win 8 x64 with one stick of 4 gb RAM. It only recognizes 1.47 gb in Control Panel-System. Looked in Bios on boot and it shows 175_____ mb RAM. I switched the stick to the other of the 2 RAM slots and nothing changes....same 1.47. Any thoughts?
I just ran Win Memory Diagnostics Tool with nothing reported amiss.

No. They've had comp since last fall and never worked decent. Was going to add more RAM for them and then found it physically already had 4 gb.

It's pretty basic help from Toshiba site. If it isn't recognized take for repairs.

" the memory (RAM) in your laptop is not recognized:
Turn off the computer and disconnect the AC adapter.
Remove the RAM, check the connections and reinsert it.
Restart the laptop and recheck operation.

If you have inserted new RAM and get this error again, insert the removed (old) RAM and reboot the laptop. If the error continues your laptop may require repair. Click here to begin the repair process. "

That link is for troubleshooting. I'll copy and past the specs from the Toshiba. It will tell you what you can upgrade to

Are you sure that RAM is 4GB? 1,073,741,824 would be 1 GB. 4 GB would be 4,294,967,296.

According to Crucial, that laptop can handle up to 16 GB of RAM, (two slots, 8 GB in each).

If they just purchased the laptop back in the fall of last year, and it's never worked right, RMA a replacement.

Someone mentioned CPU-Z to check memory. Ran it and it does recognize 4 gb DDR3 RAM in system. It seems like there is plenty of RAM when using the comp. 1.47 would be very slow wouldn't it?

The link I provided in my post #11. You can download and install the memory scan tool on the Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5307.
