So, the BIOS updated itself and that seemed fixed. Then it said that the BOOTMGR file was missing. I used the MS repair disc and all seems fine now..... but is it??

Also, now that I have done this, I am now being told that my Windows is not genuine! I should add at this point that when this first happened, I put in a recovery CD with Clonezilla on it that I got from the computer shop. It did some stuff, then it asked me question that I could not answer so I exited it and put in the Repair Disc instead. Relevant, I don't know. Thanks, Lar

Hi LarryB. So does Windows 7 work properly? If you attempt to activate Windows 7 with your product key does the system get re-activated?

    Hi Evan,

It seems to work ok but my wallpaper is now black, the Sys Properties says that I must activate now. It won't accept the product key because it starts with zeroes and is (therefore?) OEM. It doesn't like it. Not sure of it was clonezilla or the hardware change of the updating/rebuilding of the BIOS. Thanks.

Yeah, every method starts off right off the bat with "you have entered an invalid product key" without my having entered anything or it won't let me enter it because the key starts with a zero. So the activation or online methods don't work.

Any thoughts on the original BIOS corruption or the missing BOOTMGR file?

    Thanks, Larry

Sadly, my SLIC table must be corrupted from the BIOS update. MGADIAG showed no table.

Have you tried calling Microsoft and telling them your situation to see if they can verify your product key as being valid?

I would recommend submitting a Windows Genuine support ticket request and having a Microsoft employee solve your issue. You can do this by following the instructions here,
Submit a genuine Windows technical support request
    .

As for the BIOS corruption and the missing boot manager I am not sure how a BIOS update would have caused that. Did you make any changes to your system other than updating the BIOS before this problem occurred?

Nope. As soon as the BIOS updated and restarted, I got the missing BootMgr message. Do BIOS's get corrupted like that sometimes? I have never seen it before.

I will have to ck on the lineage of this Win7 before I go to MS. I didn't build this one.

    Thx, Lar

An update to your motherboards BIOS should've gone through with no issues. If you ran the BIOS update utility in Windows 7 and had some background programs that could have interfered with the update then I can see how there could have been a higher probability of the BIOS update not completing.

I don't think it updated, per se, but did so as a result of the corruption. My Gigabyte mobo has a UEFI DualBIOS function and maybe rebuilt itself with a backup BIOS. I really don't know except that the update corrected the corruption.

I have read that BIOS updating via Windows is dangerous with AV programs that could cause hiccups and that a direct via USB Flash method is much more stable.

I did read that sometimes something weird with the CMOS can cause a corrupted BIOS, so I cleared that.

If I end up having to buy a new OS, can I buy a sealed OEM version or should it be a retail version? They are both offered.

Also, since my SLIC file is missing the table, won't ANY product key fail to activate, even from a new one that I just purchased?

As long as you have a valid product key that works then the worst thing you would have to do would be to perform a repair install of Windows 7 if the activation feature is damaged somehow.

You wouldn't need to buy a new Windows 7 version.

I had the system build so I don't KNOW if it is legal or not. I assumed it was, but maybe I was wrong.

Everything says no, it is not genuine. So, I am willing to buy it. How do I do that? What is in there is an OEM version. I want the Win 7 Ultimate and I checked with MS and they don't sell it anymore. Plenty for sale on ebay (sealed only) but HOW do I make this right? Can I buy a retail and install it over an OEM? etc.....

How did you get Windows 7 installed on your computer initially? Was Windows 7 preinstalled or did you have someone give you a computer with a Windows 7 DVD?

Did you run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool?

Had it custom made and I guess he put on a used OEM version. I have read that there were/are ways of doing that if you are in the "know ". He's out of biz and I have a black desktop. No DVD.

You ran through the tutorial of Activating Windows 7 by Phone correct?

If so then this link describes your issue, You receive an error message when you try to activate Windows Vista or Windows 7 on a computer that was obtained from an OEM.
