No, I installed Classic Shell on a relative's Windows 8 laptop.

Have you tried it (CS) before?

    Thanks to both of you.
I have not tried CS, because I only have win 7 on my computer. My boss got a new laptop with win 8 on it and he just got off an XP laptop, so I was trying to make it easy for him. I f I understand it correctly, win 8.1 is a free upgrade to win 8 users. I will wait till its out and then install that for him.

    Thanks again
    Sven

Yes it is a FREE upgrade. Think the launch date is Oct. 18, 2013. Should be released for an update pretty soon after that.

Classic Shell can make the Windows 7 start menu work like the one on XP. In addition, you can hold down the shift key before clicking on the start menu and, voila, the Windows 7 menu appears again.

I use Start8. It does not have all the bells and whistles of Classic Shell, but I don't want or need bells and whistles.

It is not free, however it only costs $5 and IMO is worth it. It has a 30 day trial period.

When looking for a solution (instead of rolling back to W7, which I think is a mistake) I also tested Classic Start 8, Start Menu 8 and IObit Start Menu 8. But Start8 fit my needs best, without any extras I don't need.

Good idea as 8.1 does bring back (sort of) some of the same features.
