I am in the process of advising a friend about purchasing a new desktop computer.
She has been using Win 7 for some time, but am not sure whether to advise her to get win 7 or win 8.1. She is not very computer literate.
I have had no experience with 8.1 so cannot help with the decision.

    I would appreciate your opinions.

    Thanks in anticipation.

The simple thing to do then would be to get a Win 7 machine from HP or Dell...while you still can.

Hi hill47. I agree with Steve. If you and your friend are more familiar with Windows 7 and you don't want to deal with learning the new interface of Windows 8.1 then I would advise on just sticking with Windows 7.

Windows 7 all the way. As Steve R Jones suggested go with the HP or the Dell.

Thanks for the replies, but what is your opinion of win 8.1. Is it worth learning or would you recommend waiting for windows 9??

I haven't logged-in a great deal of time with 8 /8.1, but I prefer Windows 7 interface, menu, and Aero style looks.

The downside of Windows 7 is its shorter lifespan.

In my opinion, Windows 7 is better in terms of visual appearances (Aero) and ease accessibility.
Windows 8 is okay, but it will take time to get use of the new type of startscreen

Win 8.1 all the way. I use both and like the 8.1 better than the 8. I did have a start type menu for 8. Removed it and then upgraded to 8.1. It is better than the 8 was.

Update to W8.1 and then form an opinion. With you MrBill. Like all MS OS's, I have no need for everything provided in the OS.
What I do use - works for me. Neil.

    I would get windows 8x.

Take her to a store and have her demo windows 8. She probably only uses a comp for a select few things. She'll figure out how to do what she wants easily enough.
