So I have a win 7 Ultimate machine 32 bit It is 5 years old but I only use it once a week for several hours. Anyway, this afternoon, I started it and after awhile it froze. I hit the reset button and it restarted, went through the bios dump and memory count. when it went to the HD, it said the usual, "win wasn't shut down properly last time" and gave me the options. (start normally, safe mode, etc etc)

Hitting normal start gave me this:

    \windows\system32\winload.exe

Windows cant verify the digital signature of this file 0xC0000428

Going to safemode does the same thing

So anyway, Windows suggests a Win repair with an install disk, which I do not have since I purchased this machine with it preloaded.. All I have is a boot disk and an image that I create about every 2 months

Any suggestions anybody? Any FRST quick fixes available?

    Thanks

    Hi elcajongunsfan.

You will need to create a Windows 7 DVD to repair the Windows 7 OS. You can find Windows 7 SP1 ISO files here, Windows 7 SP1 ISO Image Downloads.

You will need to download a torrent client to download the Windows 7 ISO image. Download the portable version of uTorrent and run the program.

After the program opens, click on the add link button and paste the download link of the Windows 7 ISO file that matches the version of Windows 7 that you have installed.

Once you have downloaded the ISO file you want, download and run the portable version of Active ISO Burner and burn the Windows 7 ISO file to a DVD.

After you have created your Windows 7 DVD follow the instructions from here to perform a repair installation of Windows 7, How to Do a Repair Install to Fix Windows 7.

I should also mention, that if you have an image of your computer that you created and you want to restore your computer using your system image instead then you can do that by following this tutorial, How to Do a System Image Recovery in Windows 7.

Here's an update: Running my image boot disk cleared the winload problem but now the loginui, userinit, and winlogon complain about msctf.dll missing

@Evan Omo Googling this issue seems to suggest running bootrec type commands might fix it, but I've never done it

also, a question about your .iso site. There are three different 32 bit Ultimates. does it matter which one I choose?

I'll probably do the image restore first

    Thanks

I did eventually..Installing the Torrent and d/l ing was fairly painless. I've never used one before, and when it completed and said it was now "seeding" I'm like "what the hell does this mean? "

The reason for my question was there was three different files and the group of numbers before the .iso were different and I did'nt know if that had any significance..

I'll try it tonight.. I dont think the repair can replace the missing msctf.dll file

    Regards

And..............that did the trick Booted with a sys recovery disk, plugged in the external drive, clicked on image restore, and like that commercial from the Serv Pro, like it never even happened

Well, there are some updates I have to deal with, but that should be done tonight

    Marking this as **SOLVED***
